On December 16th 2001, five AWA Flight
Attendants including myself, ‘The Hag’, went to pay
our respects at ‘Ground Zero’. I found myself
hesitant with fear to see with my own eyes an
unexplainable devastation that had caused pain for
so many innocent people. Knowing in my heart that
this was a final resting place of loved ones.
Family and friends now only had this catastrophe to
remember their losses from. I wasn’t sure if I was
strong enough to get that close to something that
had regard to a profession I was related with. To
pay tribute to those who did share in our flying
professions, I knew I did need to get that close.
To say a prayer of remembrance and to pay
appropriate respects to ‘Flying Friends’ now
departed as well to the others who had perished.
In a city of millions, New York City had come
together as one. The hustle and bustle of a major
city carried on, but in my opinion it did so with a
quite camaraderie to which I have never seen the
likes of before. Seeing what resembled the remains
of a war zone, the ‘Brotherly Love’ gave it some
peace. From every corner turned, there were
memorials, heroes in uniform, construction workers,
volunteers, all who gave of themselves to put a city
in turmoil back together. You could feel the
strength of unity and patriotic pride. I know that
it made this Flight Attendant even more proud to be
an American.
The
five of us met some of the locals, Fire Fighters,
Police and a few of the residence that now were
allowed to go back to their homes, they welcomed us
with open arms. Although we were strangers there to
view this tragedy, their warm kindness left us
feeling like friends.
Below are a few pictures I’d like to share with
you. Let us never forget.
