These fascinating and enigmatic monuments to a long-departed age continue to fascinate visitors and intellectuals alike. Pre-dating the Romans, these collections of monuments and temples offer a tantalising insight into what life must have been like in ancient times. UNESCO calls the Barumini site “the finest and most complete example of this remarkable form of prehistoric architecture,” and when you visit you’ll see why.

Thought to be tombs or burial chambers, the complex at Barumini in Sardinia is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The complex, focused around a four-storey tower, was first uncovered in the 1950s by Italian archaeologist Giovanni Lilliu who discovered a fortified village that at some point during its history had been covered with earth and had become a hill. Using Carbon dating to analyse a piece of an olive tree found wedged between some of the large basalt boulders that form the structure, archaeologists discovered that this part of Su Nuraxi dates back to 1478 BC.

The four main towers surrounding the bastion, placed at sentinel points in the structure and originally built on two floors, are also thought to date back to the 13^th century BC. About two centuries later, in the 1200s BC, the structure of the towers was reinforced by adding three extra metres of basalt, making it even more difficult for unwanted visitors to enter the bastion.

The area is open for visitors all year round from 9am until one hour before sunset with no closure for lunch. All visitors to the Nuraghic complex must be accompanied by an official guide, and scheduled tours of the complex operate approximately half-hourly from opening. There are plenty of guides who speak excellent English, but to be assured of an English-speaking guide it’s best to contact the tourist centre in advance and book a time for your visit. On your tour you can see the fortress, passing through narrow tunnels that were hand-carved in the rock.

There are Nuraghi all across Sardinia and they pop up in the most unexpected places. One of the most spectacular marriages of Nuraghic monuments with other periods in history can be found at the Sardinian city of Alghero. You can find historical relics in even the most touristic areas. At Arazachena in the popular Costa Smeralda region, lie the ruins of the Nuraghic village of La Prisciona. The base of the tower is made from roughly hewn stone blocks in a somewhat irregular arrangement and is thought to have stood at nearly seven metres tall when first built. Around the nuraghe, the area enclosed by city walls, you can see the remains of at least a dozen huts – circular buildings about 5 metres in diameter often with paved interior floor and a clear threshold stone.
